With unseasonably warm weather and a downturn in the economy, there has been a rise in property crimes, particularly in Alberta rural areas near urban centres. Rocky View County has seen a small increase in break-ins and other property crimes.
To keep on top of the problem before it grows, our Enforcement Services Peace Officers working to increase patrols in the impacted areas. You can help prevent crime in the County by following these simple tips:
- Always lock your doors and windows.
- Lock up sheds and keep garage doors closed. This is especially important if outbuildings contain tools or ladders that can be used to break into your home.
- Trim bushes and trees around your home to eliminate hiding places and make it more visible to neighbors.
- Install outdoor lights in strategic locations. Motion detection, LED, and solar lights can keep this step “green.”
- Consider installing a gate on your rural driveway. Don’t just close it when you’re away or thieves will know when you’re gone. Keep it closed at all times.
- If you have a home security system, make sure it’s monitored by an alarm company that can respond to your home (some only respond within city limits), or at least one with experience in rural areas.
- Record the serial numbers of electronics and valuable items, and take photos of unique possessions. This will help the RCMP identify and return stolen items, and assist you with insurance claims.
- Know your neighbours, and keep an eye on each other’s property. Take note of any suspicious vehicles, and record the license number if you can. Report any suspicious activity to the RCMP.
In an emergency, call 911.
